Matt is an 11 year-old day camper at the D. Bradley McWilliams YMCA at Cypress Creek and today we’re taking a look at a camp day from his perspective…
Today at the Y we visited NASA. There were a lot of interesting things to see/do. Most of it was exhibits we could try such as the Apollo 11 launch simulator and a space shuttle simulator. A speaker showed us a model of the first generation International Space Station and told us about how they live in space including sleeping quarters, machines for exercise for a minimum of two hours per day so they don’t suffer from bone loss, restrooms and where the astronauts could go on Twitter and Facebook. We could also buy authentic space food. My favorite thing was trying on the space suit helmets.
In camp there is always something fun for us to do. Before and after our field trip, we played games. In the morning we played “knockout” – a basketball game where each player tries to make their shot before the person behind them. If you miss, you’re out. You have to be quick and it helps with free-throws and rebounds. We were able to play again after our field trip.
I also like the counselors. Our counselor is Shannon. He’s nice and a good basketball player.
Even though it rained, overall the day was a good experience. I’m looking forward to swimming and the water slides again, and the field trips to Mountasia and paintball.
