YMCA Operation Backpack: Mission Accomplished

Volunteers from the Y stuff thousands of backpacks.

As summer officially comes to a close and families are gearing up for the start of a new school year, the YMCA is proud to announce that we have exceeded our 2012 YMCA Operation Backpack goal. Thanks to generous Houstonians and this year’s sponsors, including KTRK Channel 13, H-E-B, Shoe Carnival, Gulf States Toyota, Home Depot/Kidde, Luby’s and Fuddruckers, we were able to supply more than 50,000 students with backpacks and school supplies.

This week volunteers and staff from the YMCA gathered to stuff 7,500 backpacks with tons of school supplies, thanks to tear-pad donations from H-E-B. More than $65,000 was donated at registers across the city and we can’t help but feel extremely appreciative to those who donated and helped stuff the thousands of backpacks.

$65,000 in tear-pad donations at H-E-B registers helped the Y stuff 7,500 backpacks.

The three-week school supply drive takes an army to coordinate and we could not have done it without generous support from our sponsors, community volunteers, local businesses and YMCA staff. Thanks to YMCA Operation Backpack these students now have the opportunity to start school with the resources needed to be successful. We are already looking forward to next summer and impacting even more students!

Thank you so very, very much for helping my two grandchildren obtaining backpacks. It would not have been possible without the expert assist of Dawn at the Trotter YMCA. Accolades to you! What a difference you made for a seven and nine year old whose mom is a single parent without child support.

    Muchas Gracias!

We are honored to have the opportunity to serve you and your family. We will be sure to pass this on to Dawn and her co-workers. It is wonderful to know that their hard work and the support of the Houston community makes a real difference.
